LNW Gaming Announces Closure of Michigan Facility, Leading to Layoffs
LNW Gaming, a subsidiary of Light & Wonder, has made a significant announcement regarding the closure of one of its facilities in Michigan. The closure will result in approximately 100 employees being laid off, as confirmed by the company’s filing.
Layoffs on the Horizon
According to a WARN notice submitted to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in February, the facility located at 22630 Haggerty Road in Farmington Hills, Michigan, will cease operations next month. LNW Gaming has stated that the closure of the venue will be permanent, necessitating the layoffs.
LNW Gaming has revealed that around 92 employees will be laid off due to the shutdown of the Michigan facility. The layoffs are scheduled to commence on April 27 and will impact various positions, including entry operators, game show presenters, managers, supervisors, and trainers.
The company has noted that the affected workers are not affiliated with a union and do not have any bumping rights.
Legal Setback for LNW Gaming
Recently, LNW Gaming faced legal challenges in Nevada, where a judge ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a case against the company.
The lawsuit was brought forth by Talisman Group, represented by the boutique law firm Bailey Kennedy based in Las Vegas. Talisman alleged that LNW had breached an existing distribution agreement for the popular baccarat product EZ Baccarat.
Despite leasing EZ Baccarat to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, LNW also promoted a competing no-commission baccarat game called Ruyi Baccarat, leading to the legal dispute. The judge sided with Talisman, acknowledging LNW Gaming’s violation of the contract. The plaintiff’s legal team celebrated this victory, considering Talisman’s modest size compared to LNW Gaming.
The legal battle will now progress in Vancouver.
Light & Wonder’s Shift Away from Live Casino Market
In a separate development, Light & Wonder’s parent company announced its decision to exit the live-dealer iGaming market. This decision was revealed during the company’s recent earnings call, leaving Evolution and Playtech as the sole remaining live casino suppliers in the US.
The management of Light & Wonder stated that they will concentrate on other products that offer more promising returns compared to live casino gaming. CEO Matt Wilson emphasized that the live casino vertical constituted a smaller portion of the business than initially anticipated.
This strategic shift reflects the company’s commitment to maximizing profitability and adapting to the evolving landscape of the iGaming industry.
