MGCB Cracks Down on Illegal Offshore Gambling Operators in Michigan
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has taken decisive action against offshore operators SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag for conducting illegal gambling activities in the state. This move is part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to enforce Michigan’s gaming laws and protect consumers from unauthorized gambling practices.
Illegal Activities Uncovered
Following an anonymous tip, the MGCB launched investigations that revealed both SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag were in violation of Michigan’s Lawful Internet Gaming Act, Gaming Control and Revenue Act, and Michigan Penal Code. SportsBetting.ag was found to be illegally accepting wagers on a wide range of activities, including sports, horse races, politics, table games, card games, and virtual casino games. The platform even offered cash-back incentives for casino losses.
Similarly, BetOnline.ag was discovered to be offering illegal betting options such as contest tournaments, sports betting, live events, casino-style games like slots, table games, blackjack, poker, horse racing, and esports. All of these activities involved real-money wagers and could be funded using credit cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrencies.
MGCB Takes Action
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams emphasized the Board’s commitment to upholding Michigan’s gaming laws and ensuring a safe and fair gaming environment for residents. The operators of SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag have been given 14 days to cease all operations in Michigan. Failure to comply will result in legal action, in coordination with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.
Cease-and-Desist Letters Sent to Dozens of Offshore Operators
In addition to SportsBetting.ag and BetOnline.ag, the MGCB also sent cease-and-desist letters to several other offshore operators offering unlicensed gambling to Michigan residents. The list of operators includes names like 7 Bets Casino, Cherry Jackpot Casino, Prism Casino, and more.
Regulated Online Gambling in Michigan
It’s important to note that licensed online gambling operators are the only platforms legally authorized to offer online casinos and mobile sports betting in Michigan. The state’s first regulated casino sites were launched in January 2021, providing residents with a safe and regulated gaming experience.
